The seventh verse of the tenth chapter says, ‘The individual’s life is the life of the whole, the individual’s happiness is in the happiness of the whole.’ This is the eternal truth and the bedrock of our universe. The term organisation means division of labour. Each does his own part and the parts taken together express an idea of harmony. It deals with the good and bad side of organised life in India.
One of the poignant examples of Vivekananda’s servant leadership, which demonstrated both his commitment to community-building and to the growth of all, took place shortly before his demise. One day

Swamiji confided to a devotee: “I shall never see forty.” “But Swamiji”, the devotee protested, “the Buddha did not do his great work until between forty and eighty”. Vivekananda then explained, “I delivered my message and I must go. The shadow of a big tree will not let the smaller trees grow up. I must go to make room”. Such self-sacrifice is the mark of real servantleadership, surrendering one’s very life for the good of an organisation.
The eleventh chapter covers the rules of the Math and Mission, for its householder members and their relationship with the Monks. The Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission are twin institutions that embody Renunciation and Service respectively, the two national ideals for India.

Strength and Salvation

Swamiji’s central message in the 19th verse of the twelfth chapter, ‘let every man and woman and child without respect for caste or birth, weakness or strength, hear and learn that behind the strong and weak, high and low, behind everyone there is an infinite soul assuring the infinite possibility and infinite capacity of all to become great and good’.
