A code of laws is necessary to govern a society. As society progresses, laws meant for a certain time become irrelevant and have to be modified. However, some endure. While the modern world disproportionately honours its richest and most successful, saints who have renounced the material word continue to draw our reverence. This book validates and reflects the enduring nature of Sanatana Dharma principles.
Spiritual Foundations
The first chapter begins, as per tradition, with obeisance to his teacher Sri Ramakrishna, Sarada
Devi the divine mother, Lord Shiva and the motherland. It is put in 93 Sanskrit verses as an invocation. It includes his clarion call, ‘Arise, awake and see her seated in her eternal throne, rejuvenated, more glorious than she ever was’ and a eulogy to mother.
The second chapter focuses on the individual soul, the world and the divine in 241 Sanskrit verses. The soul is eternal, immortal and perfect — when we remain connected to it, it serves as a guide to humanity. The present is determined by our past actions and the soul keeps evolving from birth to death.
The third chapter, comprising 177 verses, deals with Swamiji’s focus on individual growth as a primary component of social reform. Liberty serves as the only condition for this growth. Ancient Vedic customs have been remodelled according to the needs of society, to reflect these principles.
The fourth chapter of 367 verses analyses religion’s role, scope, ramifications and infinite possibilities. Education is the manifestation of the inherent perfection of man. A universal religion will have no room for persecution or intolerance, but will recognise divinity in each and every individual. Its focus will be to assist
